The reel won't download

Updated September 1, 2026 · 2 min read

In short

The video is made on your device: it needs a modern browser and an open tab. No Download button means the browser cannot encode. A guest may need the host to download once first.

The reel's video isn't fetched from a server; your browser builds it, frame by frame, when you ask. That makes it fast and free, and it means the few things that can stop it are all on the device in your hand.

There's no Download button

The Studio shows this instead: Video export needs a modern browser. Your reel still plays here, and any modern phone or desktop browser can download it. The browser can't encode video. Try the current version of Safari, Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on a phone or computer from the last few years; an in-app browser (a link opened inside a messaging or social app) is the usual culprit, so open the page in the real browser instead. The reel plays regardless. How the download normally works is in download the reel as a video.

It started, then stopped

Closing the progress dialog cancels the encode, and a tab left in the background for a long stretch can stall it. Keep the tab open and in front until the file saves; it usually takes a few seconds, longer on an older phone or for a 60-second reel. Then tap Download video again.

It downloaded but nothing was saved online

A message says your video downloaded but the shared copy couldn't be stored. Your file is fine; the next download just re-creates it. Nothing to fix.

For guests: "not available on this device yet"

A guest's Download uses the host's stored copy when there is one, or builds the video on the guest's device. When neither is possible, the message reads This video isn't available on this device yet. Ask the host to download the reel once, then yours will be ready here. The host tapping Download video once stores a copy that any guest can then get, on any device. See share the reel with your guests.

Two other guest messages:

  • Too many downloads from this network right now. shows a wait time and clears on its own.
  • Couldn't make the video on this device. means try another browser, or ask the host.

The download is the old cut

The stored copy refreshes whenever the host downloads after a change. If a guest's file is missing the newest edits, the host downloads once more.

Where the file goes

Phones save it to Files or Downloads rather than the camera roll on some systems. Search for the event's name; the file ends in -reel.mp4.
